Team Florida Part 5: Crunch time has officially arrived

Tropical storms have passed through the construction site every week this month, but Florida’s rainy season has not stopped Team Florida. With the competition and FLeX House’s slated delivery less than a month away, we can’t afford to get even one day behind schedule. Crunch time has officially arrived.

Since our last update, not only has our team managed to finish the deck and modules’ installation, paint the entire interior, put in wood flooring and install the steel canopy, but we’ve also earned media coverage from FOX13 News, ABC Action News, WMNF Public Radio, The Sunshine Slate and Co-Tain.com.
The closer FLeX House inches towards completion, the louder the public vocalizes its excitement. Already, we’ve been contacted by the PBS program “Planet Forward,” which tasked us with generating weekly video updates to be featured on their website and possibly on a national broadcast.
But even with the excess of exposure we’ve gotten so far, we’re not expecting the flow of media coverage to slow down any time soon. As we ready FLeX House for the solar array, news outlets have expressed great interest in photographing and filming the solar panel installation process.

Additionally, FLeX’s all-cypress front door was installed last week—a gorgeous fixture arriving just in time for an upcoming media event where we will give preliminary tours through the home. This event will be an excellent opportunity for Team Florida to showcase the value FLeX House can contribute to the community, as we’re expecting major members of the media and academia to attend. For those that can’t attend, you can check out the video coverage on our facebook page.
Amongst the chaos construction and event planning, we’ve also had deliverable deadlines from Solar Decathlon. FLeX’s monstrous, 650+ page project manual was submitted alongside three short videos highlighting the marketing, engineering and architectural aspects of our project. The videos will contribute to our jury presentations in September.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be installing the cypress louvers, putting finishing touches on FLeX House and prepping our team for the trip to D.C. This time next month, Team Florida’s two-year journey will be approaching the finish line.
